UNCHANGEABLE SPOTS OF LEOPARDS
UNCHANGEABLE SPOTS OF LEOPARDS

This is certainly one of the best books I read in the past year.  It’s fresh and funny, yet somehow heartening and grounding.  Here is what I wrote about it when first released:

This is the The Talented Mr. Ripley for the newest generation. It’s a twisting tale of identity and the search for true companionship. (read the full review)

Jansma’s debut novel comes out in paperback soon and I highly recommend it for the intelligent reader in your life.  In the meantime, I have one copy to giveaway…

REVIEW: THE GHOST OF THE MARY CELESTE by Valerie Martin

I am fascinated by tales of the ocean, mysteries of the sea (I even have an interest in cryptozoology).  The ocean is just so vast and for centuries uncharted.  It was the greatest adventure anyone could embark upon.  But even with maps and coordinates and best laid plans, ships disappear.  What’s significant about the Mary Celeste is that she reappeared.  She was found near the Azores completely abandoned and sailing under her own power.  Her cargo was untouched, no damage was found and no one ever heard from anyone who was aboard ever again.  All of this is true.

The Revenant of Thraxton Hall: The Paranormal Casebooks of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The Revenant of Thraxton Hall: The Paranormal Casebooks of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - Vaughn Entwistle
REVIEW: THE REVENANT OF THRAXTON HALL

Those with more than a passing familiarity of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are aware of his interest in the supernatural. Perhaps mostly famous is his publication of the Cottingley Fairies photographs.  Aside from theosophy, he also sought out mediums, ever hopeful that the dead can speak to those still living and perhaps he could reach out once more to his father, his wife and his son.

This novel is completely fiction, but is based on Doyle’s own leanings. The author imagines a case in which the outcome of a seance convinces Doyle of impending murder. In order to prevent the crime, he ventures to the country house with his unlikely friend Oscar Wilde (The two really were friends).  It is a Thraxton Hall that there is to be a meeting, a symposium of the best minds in paranormal research.  And it is here that the murder is supposed to take place.
